6 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD USE COCONUT OIL FOR YOUR BEARD

Why You Should Use Coconut Oil For Your Beard

Coconut oil has become one of the hottest ingredients in the hair and cosmetic industry over the past few years. As a result, thousands of food recipes and cosmetic products are on the market.

Although we hear about the benefits of coconut oil through influences and social media, many of us are still determining what exactly coconut oil is and what it does to benefit us.

From curing Alzheimer’s disease to supporting weight loss, there are thousands of reasons why coconut oil has been deemed by many to be one of the world’s great super ingredients. But, out of all the claims, the bottom line is that using coconut oil for your beard can be an excellent way to help your beard look and feel its absolute best.

At Jaxson Maximus, our expert salon stylists have put together this fantastic guide on everything you need to know about coconut oil and how to use it on your beard.

What Exactly Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is an extract of young to mature coconuts. Harvested from the “meat” of the coconut, coconut oil has a saturated fat content of over 90%. At room temperature, coconut oil is solid, melting at 76 degrees Ferenheight. Coconut is a medium-fatty acid, meaning it is a nutritional powerhouse, unlike the traditional fats consumed.

Due to its fatty acid properties, coconut oil has been shown to reduce inflammation and improve immune function. When applied topically, it is a natural way to reduce acne and other skin conditions.

Benefits Of Using Coconut Oil For Your Beard

1) A Longer, Thicker, & Fuller Beard

A study conducted back in 2003 showed just how powerful coconut oil for your beard could be. Due to coconut oil’s lauric acid properties, it has a high affinity to stimulate new hair growth. In addition, coconut oil’s low weight and molecular structure can directly sink into the skin and hair follicles instead of sitting on top of the hair as other oils do. This makes your beard appear thicker, fuller, and healthier even after you wash it out.

A common reason hair loss occurs in males is protein loss. Coconut oil’s ability to stop protein loss makes it a perfect solution for preventing hair loss.

2) Fights Dandruff And Inflammation

Dandruff, also known as Pityriasis Simplex, is a common issue that many men around the globe face daily. Dandruff is caused by the excess shedding of dead skin from your face or scalp due to extreme dryness or oiliness.

Although there is no permanent cure for dandruff, coconut oil is one of the most effective treatments for minimizing the problem. Coconut oil works with your skin to help reduce serum build-up and add extra moisture.

Forget a dry and itchy beard. Instead, add a little coconut oil directly to your skin and immediately notice the difference.

3) Adds Shine & Moisture To Hair Making Your Beard Softer

Instead of using chemically enhanced conditioners on your beard, try coconut oil as an alternative moisturizing agent. Coconut oil deep conditions each hair strand from the inside out by sinking into the hollow center of every hair follicle. This prevents the loss of internal moisturizer, leaving your beard looking shinier, fuller, and softer.

4) Won’t Clog Pores

Just as important as your beard is the skin that grows underneath. Since coconut oil mainly consists of medium-chain fatty acids, it has a strong antibacterial effect on the skin. This means that coconut oil kills off harmful bacteria in the skin that causes acne.

In a famous study, coconut oil has been seen to kill off more acne-causing bacteria than Benzoyl Peroxide-a popular acne-fighting treatment agent. So when conditioning your beard full of coconut oil, you won’t have to worry about it breaking out the rest of your face.

5) Repairs Damage And Breakage

One of the most common reasons men do not see their beard growing thick and healthy is because of internal damage to the hair follicles themselves. Damage can happen for all sorts of reasons, many of which might be out of your control.

Some of the most common reasons why damage to the beard can occur are:

  • UV damage
  • Wind Damage
  • Smoking
  • Pollution
  • Diet

Since many of these factors are out of an individual’s control, coconut oil can be used as a natural protective barrier to your hair. Coconut oil has been shown to have a natural sun protector of 8, making it a great defense against environmental factors if used regularly. Using coconut oil for your beard can be a great way to keep your beard looking strong and healthy.

What If I Change My Mind About My Beard?

If you decide that your beard is no longer working for you, coconut oil can be a great alternative to traditional shaving cream. Since coconut oil is an anti-inflammatory lubricant, it will moisturize your skin, helping the razor glide over your face while preventing razor burn.

How To Use Pure Coconut Oil For Your Beard For Maximus Results

To have the greatest effect, coconut oil should be applied evenly throughout the beard. Since pure coconut oil is in a solid form at room temperature, warm it up before applying it all over your beard. Then, after applying an even coat over the face, brush through your beard, coating every strand of hair.

If you are going to be using pure coconut oil, there are two different recommendations we give our clients, depending on their routines.

  1. If you prefer to take showers in the morning, it is best to apply the oil 10-15 minutes before you go to bed so that it can fully condition the hair while you sleep. Wash entirely off in the mornings with shampoo while you shower.
  2. If you have a preference to take night showers, we recommend using pure coconut oil as a mask 2-3 times per week, applying it 3 hours before you shower. This should give it enough time to work its magic on your beard. Make sure to rinse with soap and water when showering.

What To Look For On Your Labels When Buying Pure Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been a popular ingredient in many hair care products for quite some time now. It has exploded all over the internet in recent years. When looking for quality coconut oil for your beard, here are four key things to look for on packaging labels.

1) Is it Cold Pressed?

Cold-pressed means that the coconut oil has been extracted from the “meat” of the coconut, not from anything else on the coconut itself (such as the skin). By getting cold-pressed oils, you are preserving the full nutrients in the oils.

2) Is It Organic?

If a packaging label claims to be organic, look out for a logo on the body of the product that shows that the Organic Food Federation has approved it. Without this logo, you cannot be 100% sure it is free from harmful pesticides.

3) Is it Raw Coconut Oil?

Raw coconut oil means that the oil has been extracted from the “meat” only using minimal heating techniques. This is coconut oil in its most natural state with the most nutrients.

4) Refined vs Unrefined?

Refined coconut oils mean that it is made from dried coconut. This process included bleaching and deodorization of the coconut.

Unrefined coconut oil means that it has been made from fresh, fully mature coconuts. The coconut itself has not gone under any intensive processing.

What About Hair/Beard Products That Contain Coconut Oil As An Ingredient?

Looking at product labels is more challenging when deciphering hair and beard products that infuse coconut oil into their products as just one ingredient. Since pure coconut oil is considered a food product, it needs to make all of these traits viable on its packaging. Unfortunately, this is not always true with companies that infuse coconut oil into their formula.

The best advice we give our clients is to look at the overall packaging to see how many organic ingredients it contains. This can give you a good indication of how natural coconut oil is. If you have any doubts contacting the brand directly can alleviate any doubts over how natural their oils are.
