A COMPLETE GUIDE TO GETTING A KERATIN HAIR TREATMENT

If you have ever experienced frizz in your hair, then you have probably at one point considered doing a keratin treatment. Like most chemical treatments, they are not created equal or stable for every hair type.

Don’t worry; we are here to help. Our expert team of salon professionals at Jaxson Maximus has put together this fantastic guide explaining everything you need to know about getting a keratin hair treatment.

WHAT DOES A KERATIN PROTEIN DO?

Keratin is made of a natural protein that is key in building a natural structural block for your skin, hair, and nails. Keratin can also be found in your organs and other glans.

The keratin protein acts as a protective layer that will defend your skin and other elms from scratching and tearing.

Think of keratin as a fundamental building block that helps keep the rest of your house stable.

Outside of humans, keratin can be derived from horns, hooves, feathers, wool, and much more. Keratin is a widespread ingredient in hair cosmetics due to its natural tendency to strengthen the hair and make it look glossy.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A KERATIN TREATMENT?

A keratin treatment by definition is a chemical process that smooths and reduces frizz in the hair. Depending on your hair type and texture, results will typically last between 4-6 months. A keratin treatment can go by many different names, such as a Brazilian Blowout, Cezanne, or a Kerasilk.

Some versions of this treatment will release formaldehyde when heat is applied to the hair. No matter the formaldehyde, the treatment is designed to penetrate the hair follicle’s porous area and appear smoother, shinier, and less frizzy.

HOW DOES A KERATIN TREATMENT WORK?

Keratin is used to smooth and fill in the hair’s cuticle layer. Unlike a perm or a chemical relaxer, keratin does not actually change the hair’s bonds. It is a semi-permanent treatment that will last anywhere from four to six months, depending on your hair.

Keratin will create a barrier between the heat and the humidity of your hair. It is an excellent treatment for both men and women looking to have their natural curls or frizz smoothed out. It works exceptionally well for those that live in a more humid climate, such as us down in Miami, Florida.

Although a keratin treatment will not remove the curl altogether, but it will cut the straightening time in half, if not more!

HOW IS A KERATIN TREATMENT DIFFERENT THAN A RELAXER?

The main difference between a keratin treatment and a relaxer is the amount of time the treatment lasts in your hair. A keratin treatment is designed to be temporary, while chemical relaxers are going to be permanent. Also, both treatments will differ in the ingredients used in the process.

Chemical relaxers will typically contain main ingredients such as sodium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide. These chemical relaxers will break the bonds down in curly hair to make it weaker so the hair will lie flat.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, keratin treatments will inject the porous parts of your hair with a protein to make it feel smoother. After some length of time, depending on your hair type, this treatment will wash out.

ARE KERATIN TREATMENTS SAFE & WILL IT DAMAGE MY HAIR?

A keratin treatment is not for everyone. Depending on your scalp and hair type, you might find the treatment irritating on your skin. It is always best to seek out a professional who is well-versed in applying a keratin treatment versus doing the treatment at-home.

CAN YOU STILL DO A KERATIN TREATMENT EVEN IF YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR?

Yes! Unlike a chemical straightener, you can apply keratin in conjunction with colored treated hair or hair that has used hair botox. As a general rule, if you seek a keratin treatment, you always want to use a sulfate & paraben-free shampoo and conditioner.
